Abstract: 【Purpose/significance】Breaking disciplinary boundaries and advocating disciplinary integration is an important measure for
the construction of new liberal arts, which brings a rare opportunity for the development of comprehensive periodicals in the field of hu? manities and social sciences in China.【Method/process】Based on more than 1.9 million core journal articles published in the humani? ties and social sciences from 1999 to 2020, we constructed comprehensive index and interdisciplinary index, and calculated the com? prehensiveness and cross-discipline of comprehensive periodicals in China.【Result/conclusion】The results show that the overall com? prehensiveness is decreasing during the past 20 years, and the trend of specialization and characteristic of comprehensive periodicals is increasing. Also, the comprehensive journals published papers with high interdisciplinary increased.【Innovation/limitation】Due to the large number and uneven quality of comprehensive periodicals, there is still exiting a significant gap between the overall situation and individual differences of comprehensive periodicals, and the measurement of individual characteristics of periodicals and the min? ing of interdisciplinary knowledge points also have its own deficiencies.
