Abstract:

【Purpose/significance】This paper aims at understanding the features and evolving process of qualitative methods used in
the papers abroad and proposing some advice for the qualitative research at home.【Method/process】Taking JASIS&T as an example,
the papers from 1998 to 2018 are retrievaled and analyzed based on content analysis.【Result/conclusion】This paper finds that:①the
trend of qualitative research methods used in the papers abroad shapes like“V”in the 21st century, ②interview is the core of all quali⁃
tative research methods, ③the proportion of interview, observation and discourse analysis is around 60% and the proportion of inter⁃
view, discourse analysis and thematic analysis is rising, ④mixed methods are frequently used in the qualitative research papers, ⑤in⁃
formation behavior seems to be the most important topic of the qualitative researches abroad. This paper further puts forward some ad⁃
vice:① prompt the coordinated development of big data methods and qualitative methods,②attach importance to mixing quantitive
methods and qualitative methods together.【Innovation/limitation】Using content analysis method, this paper systematically reviews
the evolution and application of qualitative research methods in the field of Library and Information Science abroad. However, there
are some limitations, such as the deviation of manual coding and the need for further improvement of sampling methods.
