Abstract

That any social subject participates in social activities is due to motivations. Based on the Self-Determination Theory as well as the interviews with 15 citizen archivists who participate in the ''Citizen Archivist'' project launched by NARA and the questionnaire and interviews with 35 students participating in the ''Shangda Story'' project, this paper concluded that the public's motivations to participate in the socialized exploitation of digital archival resources are in the process of dynamic development: At the beginning, the public may participate out of extrinsic or intrinsic motivations, and they can create high-quality products even if based on extrinsic motivations; while, the motivations of participants may change, and the factors that bring about the changes mainly include the affordance of system and the volunteer culture environment. Learning about the public's motivations is significant for the sustainability of socialized exploitation of digital archival resources.
