Abstract

With long time storage and access, paper archives inevitably suffer with the invasion from the dust grains, fungal and airborne pollutants, with the result of forming mud grouper, water stains, mildew, oil stains etc. Some filth attaches on the surface or penetrates inside the paper which could accelerate the degradation of cellulose, some caked filth may influence the readability. The cleaning process for paper, as an important part of paper restoration, is the preparatory work before mending, mounting or other further restoration treatment. While in China, it commonly employs the water washing as the main paper cleaning process. In this paper, based on comparing the cleaning processes and analyzing the types of filth, we introduce the recently domestic as well as foreign researches, development and application of paper cleaning methods, with the purpose to guide the practical work and improve the paper cleaning facilities as well as technologies in China.
