In this paper, the main characteristics of the American archive public service were studied, while the archives’ collection resources, their sense of public service as well as the citizen’s awareness of using them were analyzed in detail. The American archives have varied ways of resource collection and take an active role in raising social donation consciousness. They not only strengthen the skills training to the archive workers but also put emphasis on cultivating the citizen’s utilization consciousness of the archives. Meanwhile, the activity Month of Archive was hold to promote the archives’ public service consciousness in the whole society, which has achieved notable results. The article also indicated some useful points which the Chinese archives could learn from the American ones.
