Abstract

This paper teases out and interprets the core terms, background, main contents and applications of records continuum in order to correct the misunderstandings existed in current literature. Records continuum is a new post-modern recordkeeping paradigm which is based on the records series and recordkeeping continuum in Australia, as well as on post-custodial ideas and structuration theory. It argues a record is not a neutral product, its creation and keeping is a highly social selective behavior, and it is always in the process of becoming. The movement of record is of time-space extension. The ultimate goal of records continuum is to construct a recordkeeping system from bottom up, to preserve complete collective memory and to promote the development of democracy. To realize this goal, multiple entities need to be involved in the recordkeeping. records continnum can provide key theoretical framework of the recordkeeping in the new era, it has a great value in the construction of social memory, and it also can provide a new perspective to reflect the key terms and theories of archival studies.
