Congratulations to Deputy Editor-in-Chief Cui Peng Elected as Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences

In December 19 2013, Chinese Academy of Sciences announced the new elected Academicians’ names of 2013, Deputy-in-Chief of Science of Soil and Water Conversation, Professor Cui Peng in Chengdu Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment co-funded by Chinese Academy of Sciences and Ministry of Water Resources, was elected as an Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Editor-in-Chief Cui Peng has been focusing on mountain hazards and achieved tremendously, for example:

1)       On the formation of debris flow, movement, and mechanism of forming the disaster, he gradually established the initiation theory of soil-driven debris flow, deepened the understanding on the resistance of debris flow, explained the law of flow enlarged, sediment movement, and its disaster chain, and revealed the mechanism of forming disasters.

2)       On the mechanisms and measures of eliminating the disasters, he established the principles and methods of predicting and forecasting debris flow based on the initiation mechanism., pointed out the regulating mechanisms and methods of preventing and controlling disasters in the process of debris flow, and developed the modes and technologies of managing debris flow for mountainous roads and scenery spots.

3)       He also revealed the distribution laws for the secondary mountainous disasters such as debris flow, landslide, and dammed lakes caused by Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, and then proposed the risk analysis method for debris flow in different spatial scales and the prevention and control mechanism for huge debris flow.

Before he became an academician, he earned the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and Key Program Fund from National Natural Science Foundation of China, hosted multiple key national research projects such as 973 Program (National Program on Key Basic Research Project

) sponsored by Ministry of Science and Technology, and rewarded with 2nd prize of National Prize for Progresses in Science and Technology, Outstanding Innovation Talent in Sichuan Province, Outstanding Researcher from World Association of Soil and Water Conservation (WASWC), and National Outstanding Scientific and Technical Worker from China Association for Science and Technology.
