About Journal

Science of Soil and Water ConservationSSWC)is a comprehensive academic journal supervised by China Association for Science and Technology and sponsored by Chinese Society of Soil and Water Conservation. The journal is a bi-monthly and public offering issue established in 2003. It has been indexed in “the Key Magazine of China Technology” since 2004, “Chinese Science Citation Database (CSBD)” since 2011, “A Guide to the Core Journals of China”  since 2015, and Scopus since 2020.

SSWC
is committed to publishing and sharing 1) the latest research progress in water and soil conservation, soil erosion and related interdisciplinary fields in hydrology, soil, geology, plant physiology, meteorology and other fields; 2) innovative and practical water and soil conservation biological and engineering measures and comprehensive treatment methods ; 3)and the latest research achievements of relevant inter- and marginal- disciplines as well as high-tech in soil and water conservation.

With highlighting innovation and practicality as its aim, SSWC provides the latest theories, methods and research progress of soil and water conservation, and promotes academic exchanges and technological progress in the field of soil and water conservation in the world. The main columns are Foundamental Studies, Applied Studies, Development Studies, Engineering Studies, Forum , Teaching Studies and Research Review. A featuring column Yellow River Basin focuses on publishing the latest research achievements of soil and water conservation in the Yellow River Basin in China.

The more detailed contents in each column are listed below.

1)Fundamental Studies: the processes and laws of soil water erosion, wind erosion, gravity erosion, and torrential flood and debris flow; models of soil erosion; occurrence mechanism and spatial-temporal distribution of debris flow and landslide; runoff and sediment characteristics in watersheds; the patterns and laws of large-scale soil erosion and soil and water conversation; dynamically monitoring, simulating, and early warning for the stability and sustainability of ecological systems and their degradation processes; research reports on hydrology, soil, meteorology, and plant physiology related to the soil and water conservation; especially researches of fundamental theories on soil and water conservation by modern control theory and interdisciplinary analysis.
2)Applied Studies: engineering technologies on comprehensive governance of small watersheds as well as control and prevention of desertification; monitoring, forecasting, and information system building related to soil erosion; measures, monitoring, inspection, and approval evaluation of engineering on soil and water conservation; technological systems on restoration and reconstruction of degraded ecological systems; comprehensive prevention and control technologies against the disasters of torrential floods, debris flows, and landslides.
3)Development Studies: innovative technologies, products, methods, and materials on soil and water conservation as well as the prevention and control of desertification; especially research reports on construction of big data and cloud calculation on soil and water conservation, and intellectual soil and water conversation and the prevention and control of desertification in order to adapt the demands of contemporary informatization.
4)Engineering Studies. To present the studies on theories and innovative technical methods of comprehensive control of soil erosion, new ideas and new methods of engineering planning and design.  The detailed engineering measures are listed below. i) Engineering measures for soil erosion control on slope such as terraces, land preparation projects, weir ponds, and blocking-storing –draining-intercepting-retaining water.  ii) The comprehensive treatments of trenches such as warping dams, sediment-intercepted dams, check dams, gullies and river banks protection, flood diversion lands, and small reservoirs, as well as river improvement and protection engineering measures for bank protection and beach prevention. iii) Temporary or permanent water and soil conservation engineering measures in production and construction projects such as waste slag blocking and side slope protection.  iv) Sand prevention and control engineering measures such as water diversion and sand blocking, sand barriers, and chemical sand fixation. And v) land preparation and remediation engineering, mountain disaster prevention and control engineering, ecological restoration engineering, and water and soil conservation engineering measures in other fields.
5)Forum: This column aims to provide a platform of academic debates, and covers: reports on academic innovative achievements, professional reviews from top experts, hotspot topics; thoughts and opinions on focuses and dispute topics for soil and water conservation as well as the prevention and control of desertification.
6)Teaching Studies :To present the studies on curriculum system construction, innovative teaching methods, curriculum teaching reforms, and practical teaching reforms in the field of soil and water conservation and the prevention and control of desertification.
7)Research Review: systematical sort and analyses on the research advances, status, contents, characteristics, pros and cons, and achievements of a certain theme on soil and water conversation.

The successive Editors-in-Chief are Professor Guan Junwei, An Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering (Jan. 2003 – Sep. 2007), National Distinguished Contribution Specialist Wang Lixian (Oct. 2007 – Feb. 2015), and Professor Zhou Xincheng in Beijing Forestry University (March, 2015 -  now).

Guan Junwei (23. May 1916 – 29. December2007), gentleman, An Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor in Beijing Forestry University, a celebrated expert on soil and water conservation, founder and pioneer in the field of soil and water conservation in China. He is first awarder benefited by Special Government Allowances of the State Council. He had committed to the teaching and researches on soil and water conservation, protection forest in China. He initiated the specialty of soil and water conservation in China, created the first Department of Soil and Water Conservation in Chinese higher education of forestry, and established the academic system of soil and water conservation with Chinese characteristics. As the Editor-in-Chief of SWCC during Jan. 2003 – Sep. 2007.
