Abstract Exploiting the quarries without any planning has broken the landscape of the city surroundings and resulted in serious soil erosion, and caused geological disaster as well. How to deal with these quarries comprehensively is still a serious problem for the local govenment. In 2003,a program of ecological revegetation on an abandoned quarry in Wanshan town,Huzhou city,Zhejiang Province has been put into practice, which adopted both engineering and vegetation methods. In this program, paring the steep slope and nailing net on the slope were done firstly to increase the thickness of artificial soil, and then the plant growth based layer was constructed and the plant seeds were sprayed by hydroseeder, and at last the protecting and managing were done to help the plant recovering. The progress of this program was investigated for the past two years, which showed that this ecological technology could prevent soil erosion and eliminate geological disasters better than simple engineering methods, and revegetate the mining area in short time and improve the original landscape. In some cases, the ecological technology is a good example for other quarries.
