Abstract: 【Purpose/significance】Amidst the backdrop of rural aging demographics and the advancement of digital rural transforma⁃ tion, this enhanced study delves into the effects and underlying mechanisms of online information-seeking on the cognitive abilities of rural senior citizens. Our objective is to offer insights that can guide the leveraging of the health dividend potential associated with on⁃ line information-seeking, thereby enhancing the online information-seeking capabilities of rural elders.【Method/process】Leveraging panel data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), collected in 2018 and 2020, this study employed he instrumental two stage least square (IV-EC2SLS) model and a mediated effects model to comprehensively examine the impact of on⁃ line information-seeking on the cognitive ability of rural elderly individuals and its underlying mechanisms.【Result/conclusion】The results show that online information-seeking has significantly improved the cognitive abilities of rural elderly individuals. This im⁃ provement is mediated by social participation. Furthermore, the health dividend effect of online information-seeking varies across dif⁃ ferent health statuses and living arrangements: for the elderly with no disability and mild disability, online information-seeking can re⁃ lease its health dividend, and the health dividend effect disappeared in the severely disabled group. The health dividend effect of on⁃ line information-seeking is more obvious among the rural elderly living alone and with their spouses.【Innovation/limitation】For the first time, empirically analyzes the interaction between online information-seeking and the cognitive abilities of rural elderly individu⁃ als, and puts forward policy suggestions on improving online information-seeking for rural elderly people from three dimensions of fos⁃ tering a digital inclusive society, digital support from offspring, and improving intelligent elderly care services. Follow-up studies need to further develop the corresponding scale and investigate by collecting primary data.
