Abstract In order to study the reliability of the laser scanning technology for soil erosion monitoring, the soil erosion of the runoff plot in Soil and Water Conservation Demonstration Park, Heilongjiang Province, was measured with 3D laser scanner system. To calculate the amount of soil erosion, the surface morphology at different slope positions was scanned by using this system before and after artificial rainfall with stable intensities (20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120mm/h, and 30 minutes). In addition, to make a calibration on the system, simultaneously, the calculated soil erosion was compared with the soil erosion amount in collecting tanks. The results indicate as follow: there is an excellent linear relationship between the soil erosion amount measured with 3D laser scanner and collecting tanks. Hence, the application of 3D laser scanner in soil erosion monitoring has a bright future due to its higher accuracy and reliability.
