Abstract Quantifying the benefits of soil and water conservation(SWC) practices aims at providing a basis for temporal and spatial comparison of different regions as to serve the promotion of SWC technology and the decision-making for regional eco-environmental construction. The driving force-pressure-state-impact-response(DPSIR) framework,an integrated policy framework providing a holistic system approach to deal with all cause-effect relationships in terms of both physical phenomena and socio-economic development,is an ideal analytical tool for establishing policy-relevant indicators to describe pressures, changes in state and impacts or responses by society to these changes. This paper introduces the basic conception of DPSIR framework and then, according to the criteria of selecting indicators for SWC assessment, proposes a modified DPSIR framework for benefits assessment of SWC practices,in addition, the authors recommend the methods of indicators integration.
