Abstract Objective To evaluate the efficacy of tailor-made mouth bite block for auxiliarypositioning in reducing setup errors during radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). MethodsThe NPC patient to be treated with radiotherapy was immobilized with a thermoplastic mask covering the head, neck, and shoulder, with the addition of a tailor-made mouth bite block to help positioning. The patient′s position was verified by the On-Board Imager system for the first three times of radiotherapy and then once every week. Results The mean setup errors in left-right, superior-inferior, and anterior-posterior directions were -0.26, 0.36, and 0.35 mm, respectively, and the standard deviations were 0.97, 1.16, and 1.11 mm, respectively;the frequencies of setup error ≤2 mm in the three directions were 99.7%, 98.0%, and 100%, respectively. Conclusion Tailor-made mouth bite block can help improve the positioning accuracy during radiotherapy for NPC.
