Deputy Editor-in-Chief Cui Peng Elected as a Member of 9th National Committee of

Chinese Association for Science and Technology

On June 1, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Science of Soil and Water Conversation, Academician Cui Peng of Chinese Academy of Sciences was elected as a member of 9th National Committee of Chinese Association for Science and Technology(CAST).

Academician Cui Peng has been focusing on the researches of mountain hazard such as debris flow etc., and published 300 academic papers, ranked as No. 1 in the number of recorded papers on debris flow in SCOPUS. Other achievements include: 3 monographs, 1 atlas as editor-in-chief, and 19 patents (one of them is an American patent), 2nd prize of National Progress for Science and Technology as the 1st responsible person, and 3 times of provincial 1st prize for the outstanding contributions on science and technology.

On the mechanisms of initiation, movement, and forming the disaster of debris flow,

l  Academician Cui Peng established the mathematical model of threshold condition for the initiation of debris flow, revealed the mechanism of forming debris, i.e., the moving of debris flow fine particles results in the soil failure in the loosing land with wide grading, and primarily created the initiation theory of soil-driven debris flow.

l  He deepened the understanding on the resistance of debris flow and revealed the mechanism of debris flow moving in high-speed, studied the generation, transportation and evolution of sediment in debris flow basin, and explained the law of flow enlarged, sediment movement, and its disaster chain.

l  He also clarified the dynamic response of built structure by the lash of debris flow, and revealed the mechanism of forming disasters, therefore developed the quantitative risk assessment method of single-gully debris flow based on dynamic process. His systematic research achievements on debris flow are recognized in international community, thus he was rewarded as Outstanding Researcher from World Association of Soil and Water Conservation (WASWC).

On the mechanisms and measures of eliminating the disasters,

l  Academician Cui Peng established the principles and methods of predicting and forecasting debris flow based on the initiation mechanism, and built the structure for monitoring and forecasting the debris flow.

l  Moreover, he developed a set of measures and technologies regulating the initiation condition of debris flow, supply of materials and sources, and moving process, and therefore formed regulation mechanism and control technology system for the whole process of debris flow by regulating material and eliminating energy.

l  He pointed out the principles of selecting routes and governance modes for eliminating the disasters along the riversides of areas with debris flow occurring often, invented the key technologies for eliminating the disasters on roads, which were successfully applied in the main roads between Sichuan and Tibet, and correspondingly the disasters were reduced, thus he earned 2nd National Prize for Progresses in Science and Technology and Outstanding Innovation Talent in Sichuan Province.

l  He proposed the design concept of coordinating disaster elimination and landscape, developed novel technologies and established the control modes and technologies of controlling the debris flow in scenery spots based on the combination of rock engineering and ecological engineering, which were applied to successfully control the debris flow in Jiuzhai Valley, thus he was rewarded with 1st prize for Progress in Science and Technology in Sichuan Province

On the basic law of secondary disasters caused by earthquake, and the technologies of eliminating disasters,

l  He revealed the distribution laws for the secondary mountainous disasters caused by the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, expounded the movement characteristics and evolution trends of debris flow after the earthquake.

l  He established the assessment methods for the risks of debris flow, landslide, and dammed lakes caused by earthquake, developed the key control technologies for mountainous disasters after earthquake, theoretical understanding of secondary mountainous disaster system by earthquake and technologies of eliminating the disasters. The above research results played the actual effect in the eliminating disasters and re-construction after the Wenchuan and Lushan earthquakes, and Danqiu massive flash flood and debris flow.  and then proposed the risk analysis method for debris flow in different spatial scales and the prevention and control mechanism for huge debris flow, thus he was rewarded again with 1st prize for Progress in Science and Technology in Sichuan Province.

About Chinese Association for Science and TechnologyThe China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) is the largest national non-governmental organization of scientific and technological workers in China, which also serves as the bridge that links the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government to the country's science and technology community. Through its member societies - 207 in number - and local branches all over the country, the organization maintains close ties with millions of Chinese scientists, engineers and other people working in the fields of science and technology. More from here.
