Abstract A two-dimensional mathematical model of debris flow in natural gully is developed. Based on the hydrodynamic theory, the water-sediments two-phase flow theory and the Bingham rheological theory, the dynamic processes of debris flow movement, sediment transport, bed evolution and rheological properties of the debris flow are considered. The model is applied to simulate debris flow event in Jiangjia Gully, Yunnan Province and predict the flow pattern and bed erosion-deposition processes. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed model.
