Abstract In order to increase the survival rate of afforestation in arid and semi-arid area, afforestation experiment with water storage and controlled-release film to inquire into the state of growth which was in comparison with that without it showed the obvious differences in survival rate of afforestation and growth (hight and diameter) and that the experiment with it was obviously better than without it. In the soil of different depths, the water storage increased by using the water storage and controlled-release film which derived from the experiment in Wulanbuhe desert.
